Over-the-counter Toothpastes

  • We recommend avoiding tartar control toothpastes and all other formulas containing pyrophosphate. Pyrophosphate can cause gum line sensitivity, wear of tooth-colored restorations and possible mouth ulcerations.
  • If you smoke or use smokeless tobacco, we recommend that you avoid peroxide and alcohol-containing products. These products can increase the cancer causing potential of tobacco use.
  • A common ingredient in many toothpastes – sodium lauryl sulfate – can cause sloughing of the oral mucosa and irritate canker sores in some susceptible individuals. If you suspect this condition, use Natural White or Tooth & Gum listed below.

Colgate Total – currently, the only toothpaste containing triclosan, an antibacterial ingredient proven to fight gingivitis.
